Latinx Philosophers Conference

The first Latinx Philosophers Conference will take place on April 29-30 at Columbia University.

The conference includes talks in a varierty of topics including Ethics, Ancient and Early Modern Philosophy, Latinoamerican Philosophy, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Mathematics. There will also be a final plenary session to discuss the academic situation of the latinx community. The keynote speakers are Otávio Bueno and Jorge Gracia.

1:30 p.m. “Difficulty and Responsibility” by Alexander Guerrero (University of Pennsylvania), comments by Javiera Perez-Gomez (University of Maryland)

2:45 p.m. “Kant’s Mathematics: Why the Syntheticity of Geometry Needs the Analyticity of Arithmetic” by Edgar Valdez (Seton Hall University), with comments by Jake McNulty (Columbia University)

4:15 p.m. “Is the Enhanced Indispensability Argument Circular?” by Manuel Barrantes (James Madison University), with comments by Arthur Heller Britto (Columbia University)

5:45 p.m.  Keynote: “Why There Are No Styles of Mathematical Reasoning” by Otavio Bueno (University of Miami)

9 a.m. “Eudaimonia and Neltilitztli: Aristotle and the Aztecs on the Good Life” by Sebastian Purcell (SUNY Cortland), with comments by Mariana Noé (Columbia University)

10:45 a.m. “South-to-South Relations in Dussel’s ‘Transmodern’ Rationality” by Jorge Montiel (Marquette University), with comments by César Cabezas (Columbia University)

1:30 p.m. “An Expressive Defense of Ideal Theory” by Jennifer M. Morton (City College of New York), with comments by Phil Yaure (Columbia University)

2:45 p.m. “The Indispensable and the Inadequate: Latin American Philosophy and European Thought” by Stephanie Rivera-Berruz (William Paterson University), with comments by Francisco Gallegos (Georgetown University)

4:15 p.m. Keynote: “The Need for Clarity in Racism Against Hispanics/Latinos” by Jorge Gracia (SUNY Buffalo)

6 p.m. Plenary Session
