#Altmetrics: Changing Measures of Scholarly Impact

In a previous era, scholarly impact was measured exclusively through things like publishing in academic journals with high ‘impact factors’ and counting the number of citations of those publications. The digital era raises important opportunities, and challenges, for new ways of measuring scholarly impact.  This new way of thinking about scholarly impact is referred to as altmetrics.  At each JustPublics@365 Summit, we will host a panel of leaders in the field of altmetrics.

  • David Harvey (@profdavidharvey) – Distinguished Professor (Anthropology), Graduate Center. His books include Rebel Cities, Enigma of Capital, and The Limits to Capital.
  • Chris Caruso – PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology at the Graduate Center. He is a Senior Instructional Technology Fellow (ITF) for the Macaulay Honors College at City College. Chris is the Coordinator of the GC Program Social Media Fellows and Videography Fellows programs. Chris developed and maintains Professor David Harvey’s website and online courses, which have been viewed over two million times.
  • Robert Hilliker (@infomnivore) – is the Digital Repository Manager at Columbia University Libraries / Information Services’ Center for Digital Research and Scholarship.  As such, he bears primary responsibility for the growth and development of Academic Commons (http://academiccommons.columbia.edu), the digital research repository of Columbia University and its affiliates.  He is also active in educating members of the Columbia community in issues around Open Access to research.  Robert has an MLIS in Digital Libraries from Rutgers University and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Brown University.
