“Kinds and Essences: Taming Metaphysical Modality”
Abstract Many kinds involve a ‘super-explanatory’ property that accounts for their instances sharing many other properties. I shall conjecture that such super-explanatory properties lie behind the idea of a de re necessary property, that is, a property that it is metaphysically impossible for some given entity to lack. I shall elaborate this suggestion not just for chemical kinds, but also for biological kinds and particular objects.
